Interior doors are by far the best means of creating privacy as well as adding the final touch to home decor. Thanks to a vast range of designs in interior doors on the market today, those interested in enhancing their home’s interiors by these means have a very comprehensive bouquet of options available. Today, the world’s best grades of interior doors are designed for enhanced aesthetics and stability, and come with extremely budget-friendly price tags. Because it is a large and highly competitive market, you can now choose an interior doors supplier who can supply high-quality internal doors that meet your exact budget and requirements.

A quick look at what is available in interior doors today will convince you that these attractive home embellishments can indeed enhance your home’s interiors and provide greater levels of privacy to your family members. Most suppliers if interior doors today offer a very tempting array of internal doors in various configurations, ensuring that you get exactly what you need. You can choose from a virtually limitless range of extremely eye-catching internal panel doors, and now have the choice of wooden panel doors or glazed panel doors available in hardwood, pine or primed white finish. A good supplier will offer you a range of internal doors in solid timber, plywood or glass.

You may also decide to opt for moulded internal doors, which the best companies craft alluringly in wood sheet, plastic or fibreboard and then mounted onto a timber frame. This line of internal doors is suitable for both new and refurbished home interiors. A good supplier of interior doors will also carry a comprehensive line of flush internal doors. These internal doors are extremely cost-effective and also lighter, since they are made of narrow timber frameworks that are covered on both sides with hardboard or plywood.

For homes where fire hazard may be a concern, fire resistant internal doors are definitely the best option. These are invariably very attractive and extremely tough internal doors that feature heavy-gauge chipboard or a core of non-inflammable compressed straw. The unique design and construction of these popular internal doors allows them to resist fire from anything between 30 to 60 minutes. These flush and very robust internal doors are mounted into a single-piece hardwood frame and further enabled with an automatic door closer.

While deciding on the best supplier for you interior doors, ensure that you have a range of different styles, models and materials to choose from. In terms of style, you can find something that suits the overall decor of your home. In other words, you can choose from contemporary look, clear or knotty pine, glazed, white oak, hardwood and American red oak. You can also opt for a real wood veneer, which affords your internal door better aesthetic uniformity and appearance.

A door closer does just what the name suggests — it closes a door. Although most people going in and out of commercial buildings won’t pay much attention to the door closer installed above their heads, the device ensures that the door closes securely behind each person. Door closers are most commonly found on entrance/exit doors, fire doors, kitchen and service doors, and restroom doors. In addition to providing security for your facility, door closers also keep out vermin and help maintain interior climate control. Several factors need to be considered when choosing door closers: size of the door, function of the door, level of usage, and whether it’s an internal or external door.

Doors that don’t get much traffic can use lightweight door closers. Manufacturers typically describe these openers as suitable for low to moderate traffic. These types of door closers can be used in both interior and exterior applications. These overhead door closers normally are adjustable for interior doors to 5 feet and exterior doors to 4 feet. These openers are ideal for restrooms.

Doors at busy entrances or restaurant kitchens should be fitted with heavy-duty door closers. When shopping for a heavy-duty closer, pay close attention to the size door the closer works with. Moderately heavy-duty devices usually accommodate doors from 36 inches to 48 inches. Many heavy-duty closers work on interior doors to 4 feet 6 inches and exterior doors to 3 feet 6 inches. Look for heavy-duty door closers that have been tested and certified under ANSI Standard A156.4, grade one.

Heavy-duty closers are also necessary for fire doors. You want a door closer that closes securely and can withstand sudden, constant use in case of fire. The best closers for fire doors are UL and cUL listed. You may also want to consider special, electric sensor fire door closers that hold the door open until current interruption releases the holding mechanism and the door closes. These types of fire door closers should always conform to life safety code, NFPA 101.

In order to comply with ADA requirements, businesses should look for door closers that meet ADA guidelines. Auto-equalizer door closers are specifically designed for this purpose. These doors use low-energy power to assist the disabled, frail or elderly in opening the door. Some designs even allow for automatic opening when necessary. Look for low-energy door closers that are UL 325 compliant and meet the provisions of ANSI A156.19.

In addition to function, door closers can be selected based on aesthetics. Closers often come in a variety of finishes including aluminum, brass and bronze. Concealed door closers are also available for use in both low traffic and high traffic situations. Expect to pay from $140 for a basic door opener to well over $2,000 for powered openers.

Help answer the question about door closer
How do I change the door closer arm in a commercial door?
The closer unit is in the top frame and the arm is mounted to the top of the door. The closer has a square peg that the arm is clamped to. The door has to be open to access the arm hardware, but I know that if I loosen the hardware, the peg will rotate to the closed position. How do I prevent this from happening? Right now the door will not close all the way which is an indication that the arm is worn out or the peg is stripped.

Commercial property and business owners have a lot to consider when it comes to setting up a store. Planning a building, office, store or warehouse design is typically left up to contractors while the owner concentrates on pressing matters like inventory, etc.

However, neglecting to get involved in the design process may inadvertently lead to excluding patrons with disabilities. It may even result in a lawsuit. Choosing ADA compliant commercial door hardware should be the responsibility of both the contractor and the business or property owner.

The United States Department of Justice administrates the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA.) The Act became law in 1990, and its aim is to protect Americans with disabilities from discrimination, and to provide them with equal opportunity to jobs, shopping and every thing else pertaining to daily living. The ADA has gone through a number of updates and amendments as times have changed and technology has progressed. The most recent amendments to the ADA were signed into law by former President George Bush in September of 2008.

The ADA, in part, requires commercial property owners to design their buildings, offices, store space, etc. in a manner that makes them fully accessible to people with disabilities. While the word “disabilities” has a broad definition, it speaks in particular of Americans with limited mobility (i.e. wheelchair bound or crippled) when applied to commercial building design.

The parameters for commercial building design for Americans with disabilities are set out in the ADA Standards for Accessible Design. Section 4.13 applies specifically to commercial door hardware. This government publication is available for free to interested citizens, advocacy groups, contractors and business owners/managers.

Doorway egress and ease of opening are of particular importance when addressing issues of access to commercial buildings/businesses for people with disabilities. The current ADA sets particular standards for door egress, for example, to ensure that those in wheelchairs can enter and exit a public building without undue difficulty.

When it comes to commercial door hardware, the ADA states in Section 4.13.9 that: \”Handles, pulls, latches, locks, and other operating devices on accessible doors shall have a shape that is easy to grasp with one hand and does not require tight grasping, tight pinching, or twisting of the wrist to operate.\”

This means that doors on public buildings must be outfitted with ADA compliant commercial door hardware. Lever-style door handles are one example of ADA-compliant door entry hardware.

Other commercial door hardware components, such as door closers, must also be in compliance with ADA regulations. Door closers shut doors automatically after they have been opened. Door closers must be set in such a manner that allows ample time and egress for a person with disabilities to fully enter the doorway before the door swings shut again.

Other commercial door hardware components that must be taken into consideration when outfitting public buildings include crash bars/panic bars, automatic/power door openers, locks and thresholds. Every business/commercial property owner and contractor should become familiar with the Americans with Disabilities Act, particularly the \”Standards for Accessible Design\” section.

Every day millions of people around the world enter and exit public buildings. We work, shop, study and play in commercial buildings. Most people take for granted that public buildings are safe, and that components like doors are going to perform properly and as expected every single time. If we had to stop and think about how the door might work every time we entered a property, it would put a serious damper on how we do business and go about daily life. Fortunately, it’s organizations like the ISO that help make daily living easier, providing peace of mind for consumers and users of everyday products, like commercial door hardware.

The ISO (International Organization for Standardization) was formed in 1947. It is a network consisting of the national standards institutes of 157 different countries around the world. It collaborates with scientists, manufacturers and various industry experts worldwide to create product standards that”meet both the requirements of business and the broader needs of society.” The ISO helps to ensure that international standards for products and technology are developed, encouraged and adhered to by products manufacturers and industries in general. International Standards “provide a reference framework, or a common technological language, between suppliers and their customers.”

What does this mean for the consumer? Essentially, consumers and members of the public can be assured of two things:

1) Products will perform in the same manner no matter what part of the world they come from. In the case of commercial door hardware, such as an exit device, the device will perform safely and in the expected and acceptable manner in the United States even if it was manufactured in another country.

2) Technology is shared. ISO member countries work in partnership with one another. They share information and technology. This means that products (i.e. exit devices, door closers) are manufactured to perform in a uniform manner. While individual commercial door hardware companies are free to improve on existing products and to create new ones, they will still perform according to the technological guidelines as set out by the ISO.

The 1903 Iroquois Theater Fire in Chicago, Illinois is an example of human tragedy that resulted, at least in part, from a lack of product/technology standardization. The theater was rushed to an opening several months ahead of schedule, despite the lack of safety precautions, such as working fire escapes. As such, the Iroquois Theater had a beautiful architectural and interior design façade, but lacked working safety systems.

When fire broke out during a matinee, hundreds of patrons were unable to escape the burning theater. Many of the theater’s fire doors had been locked, trapping patrons inside. Other doors were outfitted with bascule locks. While they were more common in European countries, they were virtually unheard of in the United States. Just a mere handful of visitors were able to work the bascule locks. Those who could not perished in the flames.

Had international standards existed in the early 1900’s, it’s probable that many more lives could have been saved. Over six hundred died in the Iroquois Theater Fire. The ISO exists, in part, to help ensure that these kinds of tragedies do not occur.

Today’s commercial door hardware can be expected to perform to the standards set out by the ISO. These standards apply to the United States, as well as the other 156 member countries around the world.

Growing up we can remember when the multi-faceted glass and crystal door knobs were standard issue for most every new home. Bungalow, Craftsman and Ranch homes all came with these mirrored center fluted glass knobs. Finding them today, can be both challenging and expensive. You might find them in Antique stores and flea markets – but getting those to fit into your standard doors of today can be a challenge.

Don’t dispair! These retrofit knobs are still manufactured today – and can be found online. They come in the Traditional fluted styles as well as more modern pumpkin shape, swilrs, octagon and oval sets. Even glass lever handles are available online. Always look for glass knobs that are made with quality – they will last a lifetime. Solid brass shanks and steel spindles are important.

The original styles of glass door knob sets can date back to the 1820’s when the process for pressing molten glass into molds was invented. The moulds used are called ‘press moulds’ and are made from cast iron. Mouldsmiths – a dying art – would hand carve the geometry into steel and the moulten glass would be pressed into the correct shape. Glass door knob sets did not become ‘in vogue’ until after the United States entered World War I – mainly due to the shortage in brass, copper and bronze alloys.

During that World War I and II, these styles of glass knobs were gauged by Facets – or diamond points. They featured anywhere from six to twelve faceted sides with a bubble front that could show the starburst clearly. Mirrored paper or cardboard would be inserted in the back of the knob to reflect the light back through the center of the knob. More rare styles of these knobs came in colors such as amber, violet, white milk, and Vaseline glass (which got its yellow-green color from adding trace amounts of uranium oxide to the mold and allowed the glass to glow when exposed to a black light.)

These styles of knobs are available today – and the prices can range just as the quality can vary. Look for solid glass and solid brass construction – look for styles with weight and parts that can be used in modern style doors. Sets of six to twelve sided knobs cost between $90 and $150 and can be found online. A pair of cut-crystal balls – new or old – can range in price from $250 to $400 per set.

LookInTheAttic & Company offers free design advice as well as glass doorknob sets and crystal door knob sets. Standard and common Victorian style rosettes and exotic long back plates are also available in a wide variety of finishes.

As the saying goes “Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are”. This also holds true by looking at our things and the stuff that we are using daily. In decorating a new home or renovating an existing one, one cannot deny the excitement of choosing or remodeling furniture especially a cabinet, a drawer or a door. For some it is a lot like shopping, finding the right combination and accents for the accessories to match the main theme of the pad.

The main accessories for a cabinet, drawer or door are the knobs. Presently, knobs come in different forms, functions and sizes to match every imaginable furniture design. But the main purpose of the knob is its function. Before laying an eye on that intricate designed knob in your specialty hardware store, you must first identify the function of the furniture. Look into the functions of your furniture first and asses if the knobs you had in mind can sustain through the future wear and tear. Here are some types of knobs that can help you in your quest:

The conventional knobs:

• Brass knobs. These types of knobs are typically used for Victorian inspired furniture and doors. They are good for light to medium load usage.

• Aluminum knobs. These are a good accent for those chrome / steel themed drawers and cabinets. This material is good for the kitchen or the bathroom since aluminum does not rust.

• Plastic knobs. These are typically brightly colored knobs that come with hundreds of designs to choose from, may it be animal shaped or in alphabet letters. These types of knobs are practically applicable to all furniture in the house since plastic will not rust and can easily be wiped with a piece of damp cloth.

• Wooden knobs. These are knobs that are best used in the office, bedroom or study room. Avoid using this on areas of the house that is constantly wet or damp such as the bathroom or the kitchen.

• Crystal or Glass knobs. This is a new member in the family of knobs. Recently the prices of blown molded glass has substantially dropped due to modernization in the craft of glass making, hence making way to very affordable glass knobs. These types of knobs present a delicate and elegant look on your furniture or bathroom door. These types of knobs also compliment the Victorian inspired furniture. But be warned that the function of the furniture using this should only be carrying light loads to prevent the knob from breaking due to strain.

Current building regulations state that some properties and non-residential dwellings require fire doors to be fitted by law. At the present time, the essential fitting of such doors applies to both commercial premises and HMO’s (Houses in Multiple Occupation, which are commonly rented out to several individuals). The regulations state that clear access is to be made from all floors of a property in order that safe access can be made to the nearest exist. Today, for those considering purchasing a property most new homes are fitted with adequate fire doors as standard by developers.

fire doors, the vital facts
It is important to know all of the facts before purchasing and installing any fire doors.

· There are a range of doors that will prove suitable and these involve a framed door with solid panels. The generally accepted minimum thickness of 44mm has been deemed sufficient (new 35mm fire doors are available in 6 panel white grained).

· With any fire door that is fitted it is vital that these are fitted with automatic door closers.

· When it comes to purchasing any type of fire door, they will need to be tested in line with the BS 476-22: 1987 standard.

· Any door that is required to meet the bare minimum of requirements would need to be able to withstand the effects of fire for a period of 30 minutes.

· In any building an allocated escape must have a fire resistant door fitted and it is essential that this will close automatically once the building has been vacated.

· fire doors are obviously a vital element should a fire break out but another important part is the seals that surround such doors. If the heat and smoke were to seep through poorly sealed frame surrounds, this could compromise the safety of a fire door, therefore intumescent strip or smoke seal would also be required.

The benefits of fire doors are obvious and it is well known that these have and continue to protect many lives so if you are considering fitting such doors within your home or business then this is the best and safest decision you may ever make.

Rented accommodation and fire doors
Compared with owned properties, there are different requirements in terms of building regulations when it comes to accommodation that is to be rented out. At the present time, there are no regulations for the installation of fire doors when it comes to tenanted properties aside from the exception of a HMO. For those landlords who break HMO and fire legislation laws, the punishment can be severe. If the laws are breached then one can expect a hefty fine or even a prison sentence. To prevent such problems a property owner must carry out regularly fire assessment checks to ensure all essential regulations are met.

Fact: Figures released by the DCLG (Department for Communities and Local Government) indicated that a total of 363 people died in 2006. 111 of these occurred in HMO’s.

If you are looking for affordable fire doors, there are many suppliers who can provide excellent quality and prices. Some of these suppliers also have an online catalogue on their website, and you can view the doors, and call them or contact them for a for a free quote for fire doors.
